Homily (Reflection) for Monday of the
Third Week of Advent (12th December, 2016) on the Gospel
Num 24:2-7.15-17;
Ps 24:4-9. (R.v.4);Matt 21:23-27.
Topic: Be open to the Truth.
In today’s gospel, as Jesus was teaching in the temple the
chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him and asked: “By what
authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus
gave them a condition for answering their question: “Did the baptism of John
come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” After arguing among themselves
they decided to pitch their tent with ignorance.
The reaction of the chief priests and the elders of the
people shows that they were not out for the truth. And Jesus said in the gospel
according to Saint John, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my
disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (Jn 8:31-32).
The sum of God’s word is truth, cf. Ps 119:160. And the book of Proverbs exhorts us, “Buy truth, and do
not sell it” (Prov 23:23a). Jesus prayed
for His disciples partly in these words, “Sanctify them in the truth; thy word
is truth” (Jn ia 17:17). And through
the prophet Zechariah, God exhorts us to speak the truth to one another, to render
judgments that are true and to make for peace, cf. Zech 8:16.
We must therefore be for the truth always. However, oppositions
and persecutions will surely come. Again, we must also not oppose or try to
suppress the truth even when our stand or comfort is threatened.
Bible Reading: Matt 10:16-25.
Thought for today: We are called to witness to the truth, cf. Jn 18:37.
Let us pray: Lord, give us the grace to be for
truth always – Amen.
