Homily (Reflection) for Wednesday of
the First Week in Ordinary Time (I) (11th January, 2017) on the
Gospel
Heb 2:14-18;
Ps 104:1-4.6-9. (R. v. 8);Mk 1:29-39.
Topic: If you truly need Jesus.
From the synagogue Jesus went to Simon and Andrew’s house
where He met Simon’s mother-in-law with a fever. They told Him about her at
once. Jesus went and took her by the hand and lifted her up. The fever left her
and she began to serve them.
We must recall that Simon and Andrew were among the disciples
Jesus called in the gospel pericope we read two days ago. Today Jesus went to
their house from the synagogue. And interestingly neither Peter nor Andrew nor
someone else invited Him to their house.
Every disciple of Jesus is Jesus’ friend, cf. Jn 15:15. And a friend does not need
any invitation to visit his or her friend.
In the first book of Samuel we read:
He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from
the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour. For
the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world” (1Sam 2:8).
Certainly, we all need Jesus to assist us in different ways. But
anyone who truly needs Jesus must first do one thing: he or she must befriend
Him by doing His will, cf. Mk 3:35; Jn
15:14. Jesus also tells us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and everything shall be ours as well, cf. Matt
6:33; Lk 12:31. God repays all according to his or her works, cf. Is 59:18; Rom 2:6; 1Cor 3:8; 1Pt 1:17. So,
Jesus first and the rest shall be ours.
Bible Reading: Ps 91.
Thought for today: Befriending Jesus.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, assist us in our efforts
to be truly your friends – Amen.
