Homily (Reflection) for Weekday of the Christmas Season: 05th January on the Gospel

1Jn 3:11-21;
Ps 99. (R. v. 1);
Jn 1:43-51.

Topic: “Come and see” (Jn 1:46).
In today’s gospel, while Jesus was going to Galilee, He saw and called Philip. Just like Andrew in yesterday’s gospel, Philip found Nathaniel and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also in the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” He also brought Nathaniel to Jesus who looked at him and said, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”
What efforts have you made and/or are making to bring others to Jesus? What steps do you take to get souls for Christ? Or have you forgotten that you are a vessel through which the gospel ought to reach your brothers and sisters? When prophet Ezekiel was called, he was given a scroll to eat and to speak the very words to the people of Israel, cf. Ezek 3:1-4. Every word of God we hear or read is expected to reach others through us.
However, we should not be discouraged if those we speak to do not repent immediately. Ours is just to do our part and God’s to give the growth, cf. 1Cor 3:6. Hence, when Nathaniel queried Philip, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” His simple response was, “Come and see.” Saint Paul rightly tells us, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us” (2Cor 4:7).
Jesus expects us to bring others to Him. It is not our work to convert them but to bring them to Christ. Christ warns, “...he who does not gather with me scatters” (Matt 12:30; cf. Lk 11:23).
Bible Reading: 1Cor 3:1-23.
Thought for today: Bring others to see the goodness of God, cf. Ps 27:13.
Let us pray: Lord, we are nothing apart from you. Assist us in our effort to fulfil your will – Amen.
