Homily (Reflection) for Tuesday of
the First Week in Ordinary Time (II) (09th January, 2018) on the
Gospel
1Sam 1:9-20;
1Sam 2:1. 4-8. (R. cf. v.1);
Mk 1:21-28.
Topic: Even the devil.
Jesus went to Capernaum with His disciples and taught in their
synagogue with authority. Right inside their synagogue was a man with an
unclean spirit. Interestingly he cried out: “What have you to do with us, Jesus
of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of
God” (Mk 1:24).
It is important to note that the people inside the synagogue
did not know Jesus. They managed to distinguish between His teaching and that
of the scribes. Yet the man with an unclean spirit or rather the unclean spirit
knows Him too well.
Knowing Jesus and/or saying who Jesus is did not bring any
good to the unclean spirit. Although he knows Jesus yet he does not keep His
words, cf. Jn 14:15, 23, 24. And Jesus tells us, “Not everyone
who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who
does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt 7:21). Whoever sincerely recognizes Jesus as Lord ought to do
what He asks us to do, cf. Lk 6:46. Despite
the fact that the devil recognised Jesus, he was sent out because he did not do
what He asks us to do, cf. Mk 1:25-26; Lk 13:25-28. So be wise and proclaim
Jesus in your life because even the devil knows that Jesus is Lord (the Holy
One of God).
Bible Reading: Matt 7:21-29; Lk 6:46-49.
Thought for today: If one does not proclaim Jesus in his/her life it
will not differ from that of the unclean spirit.
