Homily (Reflection) for Wednesday of
the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time (II) (23rd May, 2018) on the
Gospel
Jas 4:13-17;
Ps 48:2-3.6-11. (R. Matt 5:3);
Mk 9:38-40.
Topic: Fear of one another.
Before the creation of humankind God said,
Let us make humankind in our image, according to our
likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the
birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the
earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth (Gen 1:26).
The image and likeness of our being and also the task we are
saddled with among others all point to the fact that we need each other. Hence,
God also said, “It is not good that the man should be alone...” (Gen 2:18).
However, the wickedness and evil thoughts of human beings made
God to regret creating us, cf. Gen 6:5-6.
Could this be the reason we fear each other today more than the devil? And in
today’s gospel John and the other unnamed disciple/s seemed to have been in the
same mesh. Hence John said to Jesus,
Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and
we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. But Jesus said, ‘Do not
stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon
afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us.
Dear brothers and sisters, irrespective of the fact that some
of us are not living as we are made to, we still need each other. Jesus
preferred to call us friends including Judas Iscariot whom He knew would betray
Him, cf. Jn 15:15. And He has given
us an example to follow, cf. Jn 13:15;
1Pt 2:21.
Bible Reading: Gal 5:22-26.
Thought for today: Do not envy the other, cf. Gal 5:26.
Let us pray: Lord, we beg you to give us hearts
of flesh to be able to accept each other as we should – Amen.
