Our call explained: Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time (II) (13th July, 2018).

Homily (Reflection) for Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time (II) (13th July, 2018) on the Gospel

Hos 14:2-10;
Ps 50:3-4.8-9.12-14.17. (R. v. 17);
Matt 10:16-23.
Topic: Our call explained.
The opening verse of today’s gospel reads, “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” It is full of challenges for Christ’s disciples. Jesus calls for caution while being handed over to the councils, flogged, dragged before governors and kings, killed, and hatred on account of Him.
Yet in the midst of all these,
...do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Christ did not promise Christians immunity from persecutions. They will certainly come in different forms. In fact, human existence in general is characterized by suffering. But Christians’ has been stamped with Christ. Hence, Jesus said in today’s gospel that undergoing any serves as testimony to both the Jews and the Gentiles. Those who endured to the end will be saved.
This is not a call to go out looking for problems. Every person has enough for him/herself, cf. Matt 6:34. It is a reminder of what is. Whichever that pleases God, our response ought to be thy will be done, cf. Matt 6:10. 26:42. Any cross without Christ is worthless.
Bible Reading: 2Cor 12:5-10.
Thought for today: No person is immune from cross.
Let us pray: Lord, teach us how to carry whatever cross you willed for us – Amen.
