Homily (Reflection) for Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time (I) (14th January, 2019) on the Gospel

Heb 1:1-6;
Ps 96:1-2.6-7.9. (R. cf. v.7);
Mk 1:14-20.

Topic: Answering God’s call.
Today’s gospel is made-up of two sections; the beginning of the Galilean ministry (Mk 1:14-15), and the call of the first disciples (Mk 1:16-20). Our homily is based on the second section.
Jesus saw Simon and his brother casting net into the Sea of Galilee and called them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him.” As Jesus went a little farther, He saw James and John in their boat mending the nets. Immediately He called them and they left everything and followed Him.
Answering a call involves paying attention to the caller to enable the called know why he/she is called. Similar to the actions of the first disciples of Jesus in today’s gospel, when God called Abram, He said to him, “Go from your country and you kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing” (Gen 12:1-2). Abram in obedience to the voice of God left everything to a land only God knew.
Our call is not different. Hence Saint Paul tells us that we have died, and that our life is hid with Christ in God, cf. Col 3:3. And in his letter to the Ephesians he pleads, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called” (Eph 4:1). Again, “we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory” (Eph 1:12). We are required to leave the old ways behind and live the life we are called to live.
Bible Reading: Eph 4:17–5:2.
Thought for today: Listen to the caller.
Let us pray: Lord, help us to live the life we are called to live – Amen.
