Homily (Reflection) for Saturday of
the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time (I) (06th July, 2019) on the
Gospel
(BVM on Saturday, Opt. Mem)
Gen 27:1-5.15-29;
Ps 134:1-6. (R. v. 3);
Matt 9:14-17.
Topic: Face the goal.
In the Jewish culture, fasting is a common practise. They
often parade it among other practises as visible signs of living according to
God’s will. However, Jesus warned them of the impending danger of losing their
reward in heaven, cf. Matt 6: 16-18.
One can see this same mentality at play in today’s gospel.
John’s disciples came to Jesus with this question, “Why do we and the Pharisees
fast often, but your disciples do not fast?” They expected Jesus’ disciples to
do the same. Jesus said to them, “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an
old cloak, for the patch pulls away from the cloak, and a worse tear is made.
Neither is new wine put into old wineskins....”
It is not right going about comparing one’s life with someone
else’s because that is not the standard. The standard is, “You, therefore, must
be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt 5:48). Again, it is God who will repay each person according
to his/her actions, cf. Matt 16:27.
And let no one neglect the log in his/her own eyes, cf. Matt 7:3.
Bible Reading: Matt 7:1-5.
Thought for today: God is the judge.
Let us pray: May God help us to live our lives as
His children – Amen.
