Homily (Reflection) for Tuesday of
the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time (I) (17th September, 2019)
on the Gospel
1Tim 3:1-13;
Ps 100:1-3.5.6. (R. v.2);
Lk 7:11-17.
Topic: Wipe the tears.
As Jesus accompanied by His disciples and a large crowd
approached the gate of Nain, the dead body of the only son of a widow was being
carried away for burial. Jesus said to the widow out of compassion, “Do not
weep.” He came “forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And
he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, rise!’ The dead man sat up and began to
speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.”
This miracle turned the widow’s sorrow into great joy and
also made the large crowds to recognise and to glorify God. And just like the
widow of Nain, many out there cry day and night.
What have you done to wipe the tears of your brothers and
sisters? Do not expect Jesus to come down from heaven to wipe their tears. He
requires of us to wipe their tears, cf. Matt
25:40,45. A dab can save a soul already at the verge damnation.
Saint Paul admonishes us to use whatever we are blessed with
in this world to wipe other’s tears, cf. 1Tim
6:17-18. We are to deprive ourselves something to put smile on the face of
our brothers and sisters, cf. 2Cor 8:9.
Saint James in James chapter 2 verses 15-16
queries,
If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one
of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,’ and yet you do
not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?
Rise and wipe the tears of your brothers and sisters. It is your
duty.
Bible Reading: Matt 25:31-46; Jas 2:14-26.
Thought for today: You must wipe other’s tears.
Let us pray: Lord, open my eyes to see the tears
that gush down from the eyes of my brethren. And give me the courage to wipe
them – Amen.
