Homily (Reflection) for Tuesday of
the Fifth Week of Lent (31st March, 2020) on the Gospel
Num 21:4-9;
Ps 101:2-3.16-21 (R. v. 2);
Jn 8:21-30.
Topic: We are going away.
Jesus said to the Jews in today’s gospel “I am going away,
and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you
cannot come.” Although the Jews did not understand Him yet Jesus went on,
You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I
am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will
die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.
Today’s gospel reads further,
When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realise
that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the
Father instructed me. And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me
alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.
About Christians we read in the gospel, “If you were of the
world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but
I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (Jn 15:19). Again, “If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's
commandments and abide in his love” (Jn
15:10).
So like Jesus the head, we the body are not of the world, cf.
Col 1:18. However, the big question
is whether God is still with us or not. The best way to answer this is through the
life we live. The Father is always with the Son because the Son always does
what is pleasing to Him. Do we always please God through our actions? If yes, God
is still with us, if not we must repent now because we are also going away. And
the life we live now determines where we are going – heaven or hell, cf. Dan 12:2.
Bible Reading: Jn 15:18 – 16:4.
Thought for today: Is God still with you?
Let us pray: Lord we pray you to help us do your
will always – Amen.
