Homily (Reflection) for Monday of the
Fifth Week of Easter (11th May, 2020) on the Gospel
Acts 14:5-18;
Ps 113B:1-4.15-16. (R. v. 1);
Jn 14:21-26.
Topic: Love of Jesus Christ.
Many
often say this beautiful prayer that expresses one’s love for Jesus Christ,
“Jesus I love you. All I have is yours. Yours I am and yours I want to be....”
However,
in today’s gospel, Jesus said, “They who have my commandments and keep them are
those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will
love them and reveal myself to them” (Jn
14:21). Jesus further said, “Whoever
does not love me does not keep my words...” (Jn 14:24). Again, “Blessed ... are those who hear the
word of God and keep it” (Lk 11:28).
God’s love for us is manifested in action (Rom 5:8). And love of God ought to be manifested
not in words but in action, cf. Jn 14:21. Dear friends in the Lord, do you love Jesus?
We must remember that those who are justified are the doers
of the law, cf. Rom 2:13. Accordingly Saint James wrote, “...be doers of the word,
and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (Jas 1:22). Jesus warns, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is
in heaven” (Matt 7:21). He also
queried, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Lk 6:46).
Bible Reading: Jas 1:19-27.
Thought for today: Do you love
Jesus Christ?
Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, give us the grace to love you with our whole being – Amen.
