Homily (Reflection) for Tuesday of the First Week in Ordinary Time (I) (12th January, 2021) on the Gospel
Heb 2:5-12;
Ps 8:2.5-9. (R. v.7);
Mk 1:21-28.
Topic: The incompatibles.
Jesus and His disciples went to Capernaum. On the Sabbath day, He taught in the synagogue as one having authority. A man in the synagogue with an unclean spirit cried out,
‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come
to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him
saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, convulsing
him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
This encounter between Jesus and the unclean spirit shows us
that truly God and devil cannot cohabit. Hence, the man with an unclean spirit
cried out when he saw Jesus and questioned whether He had come to destroy them.
Often children of God tend to forget this. Saint Paul warned,
“Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between
righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” (2Cor 6:14) Saint John also writes,
If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking
in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as
he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1Jn
1:6-7).
Dear friends, let us therefore live according to the will of
God if we are truly His children. If we fail to do so, we can only deceive
ourselves, cf. Jas 1:22.
Bible Reading: 2Cor 6:14–7:1; 1Jn 1:5-10.
Thought for today: Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.
Let us pray: God, help us in the struggle to live
our lives according to your word – Amen.
